Why are there Black Streaks on my Roof?
Now that the snow has melted, many people have looked up at their roof and noticed a discoloration — or “black streaks”. Just what causes the Black Streaks on your shingles?
The stains are caused by a blue-green algae. The bacteria, called Gloeocapsa magma, was first noticed in the southern part of the United States in the 1990s. It is this bacteria that causes those ugly black streaks. The algae accumulates over time as it feeds on moisture and calcium carbonate.
Most shingles are made with limestone as a filler in the asphalt. Over a period of time, this algae breaks down the roofing by feeding off of the limestone granules embedded in the shingles. The bacteria is airborne, so there really isn’t much that can be done to prevent the algae buildup.
There are a few things that can slow down the build-up…mostly making sure the roofing material doesn’t stay wet for a long period of time. Portions of your roof that are shaded by trees or leaves tend to be more moist and promote the growth of this bacteria. If possible, remove any trees limbs that hang over your roof.
The black streaking does not mean your roof has to be replaced. Many times the algae can be killed and washed off the shingles. Cleaning your roof is much more economical than replacing the entire roof because of the ugly discoloration.
